Although Amy Weaver has been a poet for about as long as she’s known her ABC’s, she first got up in front of a microphone in April 2000 at New Amsterdam CoffeeHaus in Dallas, TX. Since then, she has continuously added to her list of accomplishments in the world of creative writing and performing. She began reading in "SLAM Poetry" competitions in the summer of 2000 and became a member of both Dallas SLAMS and the 2001 Dallas SLAM Team, who won the national poetry competition in Seattle that year. She earned first place in a SLAM at Richland College, competed in Southern Fried SLAM in Birmingham in June 2001, and can be found competing every Friday night at the Red Room SLAM in Dallas. She has been a featured performer in venues across the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex including Deep Ellum and Fort Worth Art Festivals and at KIVA: The Universal Groove Set held at the Dallas Women’s Museum, also in Oklahoma City, and at the Nuyurican Poet’s Café in New York City.
Amy decided to take initiative by sharing her passion with fellow students at Richland College in Dallas. She became the Founder and President of a poetry club at the school in which she encouraged classmates not only to create, but also to read their poetry out loud to an audience. She has introduced many to the art of performance and now hosted an open mic reading held monthly on campus. In addition to the poetry club, Amy is active in several other campus organizations; including the International Honor Society (Phi Theta Kappa) and Pride Alliance of Richland (PAR). Currently, she has earned an AA and is attending the University of New Orleans film school.
Even if you can’t catch her live, you can find Amy on disk and in print. She released her first chapbook in the summer of 2000 entitled Snapshots and Confessions and followed up in 2001 with a CD and chapbook of her work both entitled Naked. She also published and edited a Richland Poetry Club chapbook released in the spring of 2001 in which a few of her pieces are included. Most recently, she has released a collection of works from 2001-2002 entitled Ink Stains. Amy is currently working on her first full-length book, Naked Imagination, which will be available to the public shortly and is looking forward to upcoming performances in various cities as she gears up for this year’s Slam season.
